Possible Itinerary
We pick everyone up at Ivato Airport in Antananarivo (Tana) and put them to bed. Usually a late night arrival. Below is the trip we are currently running, but believe me, we are very flexible. One can't help but observe all things Malagasy along the trip and if anyone wants to depart from the planned itinerary, we can work with them.
Days 1-5: Working with local gem dealers in Tana, the hub of all gem commerce.
Days 6-7: Working with local gem dealers in Antsirabe about 160 km south of Tana. We will visit a new Tourmaline Mine, buy rough or cut in the markets, and see the largest source of fossil and mineral specimens to buy.
Day 8: At this point we continue by car through the classic RN7 southern route to Fiannaratsoa (some gem trade), visit a private Lemur Kata preserve, Ambalavao for paper and silk handicrafts and continue on to Isalo national Park
Days 9-10: Stay at the Relais de la Reine and visit Ilakaka and surrounding mining areas. All sorts of rough are available to buy here as well.
Days 11-12 On the beach at the Paridisier Hotel resort between Tulear and Ifaty on the southwestern coast.
Day 13: Fly one hour back to Tana and spend that day (if desired) finishing up business in Tana. Prices can very a great deal based on activities and intra-country flights. Especially planning one year from now in a country with incessant inflation. I do think we will be safe using a figure around $2900 per person including all travel, lodging, tours, guides, and most all food for the entire time in Madagascar. We really stress the public relations impact this trip has on the jeweler after their return. It was incredible for us during our retail tenure. Consequently, we supply great high resolution images for print or web use and lots of video to be edited for cable. The best publicity will be from all your local media. Remember, no one else in your area has ever done this. The recent Dreamworks animated film Madagascar will help too.
